This project was a collaboration between Nathaniel Ober
and Dani Minuskin during the Silence I Awareness I Existence residency at Arteles Creative Centre.
This project intends to echo the sounds of silence perceived in environments naturally unsilenced.
Beginning as a recording of a frozen lake; a stillness above its unfrozen underworld, a composition was created honouring the spiritual silence of the landscape. This initial audio composition was then interpreted as a pen and carbon copy drawing by Minuskin, of which became the visual composition interpreted by Ober to produce the succeeding audial response. This process of interpretation and reiteration continued for one month while the media and methods used for production evolved. Materials came to include ashes and audio from the onsite traditional Finnish sauna, instruments built from material found in the surrounding forest and house, poetry, video installation and performance. The final dialogue of the collaboration took place in the unoccupied basement of the residency house resulting in a final video installation depicting a performance by Ober and spoken word by Minuskin, both contributions having taken place in the basement.
